A rematch from the regular season where the 49ers dominated the Buccaneers by a 34 - 10 margin.
49ers receive and have success mixing up runs and passes. 3 passes of note cover 14, 20, and 16 yards. They fail to convert a 3rd and 9 at the Tampa Bay 12 and settle for a Field Goal. David Carr of the Bucs comes out firing and Tampa responds with 75 yard drive capped off by a 19 yd TD pass to Evans for a 7-3 lead. Niners go 3 and out. Tampa Bay makes 1 first down but then has to punt. San Francisco backed up on their own 7. On second down Hurts finds Pierce for a nice 14 yd gain but he FUMBLES and Tampa Bay recovers. 49er defense forces a 3 and out as Tampa Bay is held to a field goal early in the 2nd quarter. 49ers unable to make a first down. Bucs start on their own 24 and have a nice drive down the field. They reach the San Francisco 22 before they stall. Tampa Bay with another field goal and a 13-3 lead. San Fran start on their own 25 with a sense of urgency. They pick up a couple of first downs. Then Hurts turns the corner and 43 yards later he finds paydirt. 49ers have regained momentum. San Fran D forces a 3 and out. 49ers on their own 33 with 2:26 until half. Offense continues to move the ball with a couple of first downs. They reach the Tampa Bay 15 with only 27 ticks left on the clock. But the Buccaneer D rises to the occasion limiting San Fran to a field goal and a 13 all tie at the half.
Tampa receives to start the 3rd quarter. After picking up a first down, they stall due to a penalty and a sack. San Francisco back with the ball. Will they keep BIG MO on their side? Hurts keeps the ball and gains 11 as the 49ers are on their 40. Two plays later, Hurts throws a quick pass to Pierce and he breaks a tackle and another ... finally dragged down at the Tampa Bay 13. On first down, Hurts back to pass and he's sacked for a loss of 7. They are unable to pick up another first down but they do regain the lead on a field goal 16 - 13. Nwangwe returns the ball to the Tampa Bay 45. Tampa Bay looking to move the ball. Carr back and he hits Evans in stride ... finally tackled after gaining 41 yards. San Francisco's D though stops the Bucs cold on 3 plays. Tampa Bay adds a field goal to tie the game at 16. San Fran picks up 2 first downs as they are still clicking on offense with the ball on their 46. Tampa Bays D though steps up and forces a punt. What a punt it is as the Buccaneers will take over on their own 2 with 1:40 left in 3rd quarter. After a Harris 2 yard gain, Carr finds Evans for 10 giving the Bucs a bit of breathing room as we enter the forth quarter on their 14.
Screen to Harris gains 17. A holding penalty though costs Tampa Bay a first down and instead makes it second and 13. After a short gain of 3 yards, Tampa Bay faces a 3rd and 10. Carr stays composed and finds Godwin for 13 yards and the drive stays alive on the Tampa Bay 44. Harris gains 1 on a run followed by 9 on a screen for an apparent first down. San Fran though tosses the hankie and the review says Harris was short of the first down. 3rd and inches where Harris plows for 5 and a first down. Carr scrambles for 5 followed by a couple of passes for 16 more yards as they reach the 49er 29. Harris runs for a tough 8 yards. A penalty pushes the Bucs back 5 yards but Harris turns the corner and he reaches for the end zone but is down at the 2. Harris then finishes the 98 yard drive as Tampa Bay now leads 23 -16 with 8 minutes to go. Velus Jones gives the 49ers a spark as he returns the kickoff to their 38. Hurts with a short pass for 7 followed by a Wilson 3 yard run which results in an apparent first down. But on review Wilson is just short. Ball is at midfield. Handoff to Wilson and he gains 11. 2 more handoffs to Wilson and he gains 7 and 9. Ball at the Tampa Bay 23 with 4:14 left. Hurts back incomplete. Then he finds Aiyuk for 6, Higbee for 7. First and goal on Buccaneer 10. Hurts back incomplete. Back to pass again and finds Aiyuk for 6. 3rd and goal at the 4. Hurts back, pressure, fires and it's a TD to Aiyuk. Game is tied at 23 with 2:10 remaining. Tampa Bay starts on their own 25, handoff to Harris for 3 as we reach the 2 minute warning. Handoff to Cook and he finds a crease and gains 19. 49ers call time. Handoff to Cook and he's stuffed for no gain. Carr finds Engram for 14 as they reach the 49er 39 with 1:19 left and they call time. Carr back in the pocket, flushed out and he scrambles for 6. Handoff to Cook adds 3 more as San Fran calls time with 49 seconds left and the ball on their 30 with a 3rd and 1. Handoff to Cook and it's BIG HOLE as he gains 15 putting the ball on the San Francisco 15. After a 49er time out and a Carr kneel, Carlson on to try a 34 yard field goal with 3 seconds left and it's GOOD!!!!
